Think about it.

You know, it just bugs me.

Why do we have "filthy rich" and "dirt cheap" yet they have completely different meanings?

I suppose "filthy" and "dirt" are just adverbs used for emphasis.

But why use similarly related adverbs for emphasis of complete opposites?

...That I don't know.

Not to mention, how did these sayings originate? I highly doubt wealth can be associated with being dirty or something.

Now that you mention it... Some of these words have the strangest origins.

Yeah, like how a goldfish isn't exactly gold. Or a grapefruit doesn't even look like a grape. And what's up with the "money tree"?

Maybe the seemingly random names for advertising just stuck.

...Right. This is probably why I shouldn't think too hard about some things.
