SOYC

So, today was SOYC - Start Of Year Continues. It's an annual convention held in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. And much like other conventions, there's lots of cosplay there.

So, you're cosplaying again? I thought you didn't find suitable replacements for the Cardboard Gundam body.

Yeah, never got around to finding a proper replacement. Head's still nice and intact though.

Instead, I cosplayed with a bunch of my art club juniors. We planned it several weeks in advance. Though we couldn't get enough people, we did Team Fortress 2.

So, who exactly did you guys cosplay?

I cosplayed as The Scout, since his outfit was the simplest and could be improvised using what I already had in my wardrobe. A friend who previously did The Spy still had his costume in good condition. The only girl among us went as The Engineer, and she really put a lot of work into assembling her costume, complete with toolbox. One of us tried The Medic, but gave up after failing to complete the Medigun, while the remaining one who was going as The Soldier couldn't quite finish his rocket launcher.

So it wasn't all perfect (the paint on my bat was flaking off), but when you're cosplaying with a group, it doesn't matter how accurate the costume is, or whether your face is shown or not. Some people actually liked my cosplay despite the imperfections.

That's good to know. So I suppose it's mostly group photos you posed in?

Pretty much, though we did mix it up a little bit. The Spy cosplayer got all the cool spots since he's the one doing all the backstabbing. While it was unplanned, one of us brought a rather... distracting poster, in order to re-enact bits of gameplay where a Spy uses a diversion to create a chance for a backstab.

Ah, he also had a number of paper masks as "disguises". Hilarity ensues when he got the PaedoBear one and began handing out "free candy" to little girls around.

What about the event itself?

To be frank, there wasn't anything too interesting. Aside from the usual cosplay competition, there were tournaments for games I don't play - specifically, BlazBlue (fighting game) and Weiss Schwarz (card game). Nothing of note on sale that wouldn't attract unnecessary attention, either. Well, except for an artbook.

I suppose you had fun.

Definitely. Those soccer socks make me feel like I can really run and jump like The Scout.
